Born on February 25, 1807 to James Smith and Sarah Philpot Smith. According to the
1850-1880 U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, in 1860, the cash value of Alex’s farm
was $1500. At the time, he owned one horse, three milk cows, 12 other cattle, and the value of his
livestock was $220. He grew wheat, rye, Indian corn, oats, and tobacco. When the 1870 census was taken,
Alexander wrote his occupation as a farmer, and in the 1880 census he listed himself as a millworker.
He was married three times during his life. His wives were (in order of marriage date) Charity
Mitchell, Phebe Gallimore, and Matilda Davis. His children were all from his first marriage to Charity
Mitchell. He died on 13 August 1893.
