Stephen Mitchell  Smith
Born: 15 November 1832
Died: 21 January 1913

Occupation[s]:
blacksmith
“Stephen Mitchell married Mary Gillespie Lindsey (1833-1898) in 1855. They had five children. After Mary’s death, he married Emily [A.V. Stone]. Since Stephen was the only blacksmith in the region, he was exempted from military service for most of the Civil War. He served in the New River Valley in a detachment commanded by Robert Craig Trigg of Christiansburg from December 1864 to February 1865. Apparently no service records exist to indicate whether he was a volunteer or a conscript, or whether he deserted or left due to illness.
